Okonkwo and his Father

After Okonkwo's father died, Okonkwo had little in his life. Despite this,Okonkwo became a very powerful, and wealthy man. Okonkwo's father was a very kind man, but not a very smart one. Okonkwo's father though kind, had a lot of debts of which he did not end up paying before his death. Okonkwo's father did not leave him much, therefore making it difficult for Okonkwo to succeed in life. Even with this situation in hand, Okonkwo became a successful man by his own methods of being a harsh and cruel person.

Why does Okonkwo not want to be like his father?

We think that Okonkwo does not want to be like his father because he does not want to end up being in shame like he thinks his father was in. In addition, we think that Okonkwo is afraid to be kind like his father, and then end up failing in his life, just like his father failed. Finally, we believe that Okonkwo is scared to be a kind man because he thinks he will lose the respect of a lot of people.

Though his father had many friends, he was not wealthy and therefore (in Okonkwo's eyes) unsuccessful. To succeed in life, Okonkwo thinks that the last person he should be like is his father.

I beleive Okonkwo doesn't want to be like his father because it will make him seem weak and he saw how his father's weakness hurt him. He just wants the best for himself, but it's coming off as arrogance and stubborness. He just doesn't want to fail in whatever he decides to do with his life.

Okonkwo does not want to be like his father because his father did not have titles and respect. Okonkwo thinks that these are the most honorable goals for a person to have, and so he gets them by doing the opposite of his father. The society that they live in puts a high price on titles and respect, and this affects the way that Okonkwo views his life and purpose.

Amina,I definately agree with your thought, great reasoning behind your idea! Okonkwo did have alot to live up to, because of the society he was in.
