Background:
In the book, Things Fall Apart, westerners come into Umuofia and bring their ways of life, like their religion. The coming of the Westerners changes how things were done in Umuofia. In the movie, the coming of the bottle to the tribe changed the ways things were done in the tribe.
Question:
How did the coming of the Westerners play as an advantage and a negative to Umuofia as compared to the coming of the bottle to the tribe? How did the bottle play as an advantage and disadvantage to the tribe?
Viewpoint:
We think that the Westerners played as an advantage in Umuofia by bringing more prosperity to Umuofia. On the other hand, the Westerners caused tension between the clan because of the new religion they brought with them. Next, the coming of the bottle to the tribe played as an advantage by making the work of the people a lot easier. On the other hand it caused arguments between the people. The people of the tribe had a difficult time sharing the bottle.

The coming of the Westerners waS an advantage to Umuofia by showing the people a new religion, giving them more options to share their beliefs with others, especially if they did not agree with their religion that everyone shared in the tribes (believing in mulitiple gods and doing strange rituals).
A negative part about the visit from the Westerners was that it divided Umuofia. Non-believers of the new religion didn't want anything to do with the believers. This called clashes between the people.
An adavantage the bottle gave to the bushmen were that it taught them how to use new 'tools' to help benefit their tribe. One disadvantage was that it caused jealousy and hate between the people. It made the people greedy, each one of the people wanted to use the bottle for themselves.

In both instances, the coming of westerners resulted in both positive and negative effects. In Umuofia, the new religion is appreciated by some and hated by others. In Xi's community, the bottle proved to be a useful tool, but within a short time, they realized the disadvantages of ownership.
