Nwoye's Decision

Background:
Nwoye always obeyed his father, and did everything to please him. While Okonkwo was exiled from Umuofia, white settles came into Okonkwo's motherland and brought a new religion with them, Christianity. At fist, no one expected the settlers to succeed in converting people to Christianity, but that was wrong. Slowly, but surely, people started converting to Christianity, and Nwoye was one of them.

Question:
Why do you think Nwoye turned to Christianity?

We believe that Nwoye turned to Christianity for numerous reasons. We think that he found peace in that religion. Also, we believe that when Okonkwo killed Ikmefuna, Nwoye was really depressed and thought that what his father's religion made him do was extremely wrong. So this made Nwoye turn to Christianity, because he would not have to commit such horrible actions.

I think that Nwoye turned to Christianity because it gave him answers that his traditional religion couldn't answer. Coming off of multiple deaths he needed an answer and Christianity came in at the right time to answer it.

I think that Nwoye converted to Christianity because he may have thought that it would bring more peace to his life.
He may have thought to convert to Christianity because he may have felt that his fathers reiligon was not for him. He was much more different than the rest of his family that he may have wanted to change to fit his lifestyle and who he may have thought he was or wanted to become. His father did not like him as much as Ikemefuna, who was not even his real son. Nwoye might have felt like he was not really loved as much as his sister or his "brother" Ikwmwfuna Christianity may have been something that would help him find who he wanted to be and just break free.

I think Nwoye's convertion to Christianity was much sparked by Ikemefuna's death. They were so close, and he had to be killed because the Oracle said so. He probably did not like the traditions and wanted more peace. The Christian words and hymns attracted him.

I think Nwoye converted to Christianity because he feels that Christianity gave him answers that wasn't able to be able answered by his traditional religion. He probably feels that Christianity will bring him peace in his life. Nwoye may also feel that the death of his father was caused by tradition and relgion. Because Nwoye did not want to be like his father, he decided to convert to Christianity to be different from his father.

Hi Mari!
Well I think that he converted in order to get away from his father's expectations and to instead rely on a religion which would bring him peace and tranquility rather than being on a short leash by his father's expectation's and by the extreme actions that he had to commit on his former religion.

I think that he turned to christianity because he felt like that was the best thing to do. He felt like that brought him peace, and thats all he wanted, he wanted peace from his father. Okonkwo expected so much from him and maybe he felt like he didn't know what to do. He was probably confused because he was under alot of preassure. Also maybe he felt like commiting to a religion would make him see things in a better way, for example, the death of his father.

I agree with everyones answrs. I can coclude that everyone thinks that Nwoye found peace in Christianity. Also, i can coclude that Nwoye did not like his father's religion and that is why he turned to Christianity as well.

Does anyone think that things would have been different if Okonkwo's religion was more peaceful?
