Background:
Okonkwo wanted to prove himself as a strong and powerful man in his village. While trying to do this, Okonkwo did a lot of things he should not have done. For example, he killed Ikemefuna, a boy he treated as his own son. In addition, he treated his wives very bad and beat them. Also, he "accidentally" killed Ezeudu's son, and because of this he had to flee from the clan/land for seven years.
Question:
Do you think karma played a role in Okonkwo's life? If so, how? If not, why not?
We think that karma definitely played a role in Okonkwo's life. We think that since Okonkwo committed a lot of horrible things, now he has to go through bad things himself. We believe that karma in his case is playing a role in a negative way. As a result of Okonkwo's actions he now has to leave his clan, and live in what we interpret as shame. Okonkwo will now have to pay the price, which is go and live to his motherland for 7 years, because of his negative actions.

Karma played a huge role in Okonkwo's life. After abusing his wives, children, and killing his son (although he didn't want to), he finally got what he deserved. After being exiled for 7 years from his village he has a lot of thinking to do and learning about himself. During this journey he will learn about his motherland and why women are important and probably many other things. But he has 7 years to try and prove himself worthy again and learn from his mistakes so, "history doesn't repeat itself."

That is a really good thought AlLisia, but do do you really think that Okonkwo will learn from his mistakes to be a better person?

People say that what goes around comes around; defenatly in this case, I think that karma did play an important role in Okonkwo's life. I belive he got what he deserved, he shouldn't have killed Ikemefuna if he knew it wasnt the right thing to do, he shouldnt have beat his wife on week of peace, i dont think that the death of Ezeudo's son was his fault though. But at the end he ended up paying for his actions.

I, as well as Ilse blieve in karma; what goes around comes around. So do you think that Okonkwo will change his ways, like how he acts now that his life has changed?

I think that karma did in fact play a role in Okonkwo's life, because after being a total jerk to his wife and children, he in return was affected by having to leave Umofia and go to his motherland where he had to start over with no titles. However I don't think it was fair that his family had to leave with him despite of him, but they had no other choice since they were dependent upon him.

I think Karma did not play s signifigant role in Okonkwo;s life. I dpn't think it plsyed a role because I don't believe it played a role because in his culture's standards, he did nothing wrong. Although we now realize beating women is abussive, in Okonkwo's culture it was expected and allowed. Therefore Karma could not have played a role because in the book, he did nothing wrong.
